The entire process of living in Zimbabwe is somewhat of a risk at the moment, so you might envision that there would be little appetite for supporting Zimbabwe’s gambling halls. In fact, it seems to be working the opposite way, with the atrocious economic conditions creating a bigger eagerness to play, to attempt to find a quick win, a way out of the problems.

For almost all of the people living on the tiny local money, there are 2 dominant forms of betting, the national lotto and Zimbet. As with practically everywhere else in the world, there is a state lotto where the probabilities of hitting are extremely tiny, but then the prizes are also extremely big. It’s been said by economists who understand the subject that the majority do not purchase a ticket with an actual belief of winning. Zimbet is based on one of the national or the UK soccer divisions and involves determining the results of future games.

Zimbabwe’s casinos, on the other hand, look after the very rich of the nation and vacationers. Up until recently, there was a very substantial sightseeing industry, built on nature trips and trips to Victoria Falls. The economic anxiety and associated bloodshed have cut into this market.

Among Zimbabwe’s gambling halls, there are two in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has five gaming tables and slot machines, and the Plumtree gambling hall, which has just the slot machines. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has just one armed bandits. Mutare contains the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, the two of which offer gaming tables, slot machines and video machines, and Victoria Falls has the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, the two of which has gaming machines and blackjack, roulette, and craps tables.

In addition to Zimbabwe’s gambling dens and the above mentioned lottery and Zimbet (which is quite like a parimutuel betting system), there are a total of two horse racing complexes in the state: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the 2nd municipality) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.

Given that the market has shrunk by beyond 40 percent in the past few years and with the associated poverty and bloodshed that has resulted, it isn’t known how well the vacationing business which funds Zimbabwe’s gambling halls will do in the near future. How many of them will survive until conditions improve is basically not known.
