There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall gambling is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital acquired from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; although, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are supposedly required to pass, there are means around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship gambling hall, features 150 slots and 60 table games. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive resort and hotel building that highlights a number of luxuries in addition to the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 table games.
